STUDENT VISA TIER 4 (General)

International students intending to study in the UK need to obtain a valid student visa known as Tier 4. Visa Tier 4 (General) student visa enables students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) above the age of 16 to study at a licensed Tier 4 university in the UK and stay there for as long as the course duration they are enrolled in. To obtain a student visa, it is essential for the applicant to have an offer of acceptance in a study program at a valid education provider in the UK and must be able to furnish evidence of having sufficient funds to cover personal expenses and tuition fees for the course, the amount of which depends on individual circumstances. The applicants must also provide English language competency (speaking, listening, reading & writing).

UK Universities have two major intakes, i.e., September / October and January / February. The earliest you can apply for a study visa is three months before you start your course and usually get a decision of approval on your visa within three weeks.

During this duration, you may work full-time in a temporary job until your student visa expires. In addition, you may apply for a Tier 2 General visa during your valid visa period. Tier 2 (General) is part of the UKBA Points Based System and is a visa for those with a graduate-level job offer from a UK company. This type of visa can lead to obtaining a settlement in the UK.

Should a student deposit a tuition fee?

Some universities require the students to pay part of the tuition fees in advance to reserve a place for them in the university. In any case, it is recommended that all students should make deposit payments as it facilitates getting a student visa.

What is the minimum IELTS or TOEFL score required to get into a UK Institution?

The requirement is university-specific; a minimum overall score of 6.0 for IELTS and 80 on the iBT TOEFL is sought by most universities.

Does a student need work Experience to study for a master’s course?

No. Most master’s courses do not require work experience. However, if the student has some experience, it can be advantageous to explain its value in a personal statement. MBA in certain Universities requires work experience.
